'LOOK" 3e jaars expositie KABK

Elk jaar organiseren de 3e jaars fotografie studenten van KABK in Den Haag een expositie. Alle studenten maken eigen weg werk aan de hand van één gegeven thema. Dit jaar was dat het thema Schoonheid.

Elke student presenteert zijn werk d.m.v. een boek, een wandpresentatie en een film of interactieve presentatie, ik maakte een film.

Ons Genoegen, fanfares in de lage landen.

“Geef me een kind tot zijn zevende jaar, dan geef ik u de mens” - Francis Xavier. Dit Jezuïtische motto staat centraal in The Up Series, een documentaire die ik tegen kwam in het onderzoek tijdens het maken van dit werk.

Het besef dat tijdens het opgroeien van een kind de directe sociale omgeving zo’n immense invloed heeft op zijn verdere leven, is overweldigend. Dat in deze onderbewuste levensfase alle waarden worden gevormd die een rol spelen bij latere sociale integratie, vind ik overweldigend. Dit is een interessant gegeven wanneer je een scherpere blik werpt op de hedendaagse sociale verwarring.

Ondanks het feit dat velen van ons zijn opgegroeid in een stabiele sociale omgeving, lijken we verdwaald. We leven al decennia in economische oneindigheid, mediadoctrines en onderwijsvernieuwingen.

De vraag is in welke hoedanigheid zich dat manifesteert in sociale integratie en maatschappelijk functioneren. Nu we het dak van het individualisme bereikt lijken te hebben, zijn we zoekende. Hoe gaan we om met gemeenschapszin en saamhorigheid? En hoe vinden we zingeving in een wereld die tot nu toe volledig maakbaar leek te zijn?

De zoektocht naar zingeving, doelstelling, verbondenheid en sociale integratie staan centraal in dit werk. Ik vond orde als de drill voor gemeenschapszin, waar trots en saamhorigheid hun vorm vinden in ijdelheid.

Uit de oude doos!

In de afgelopen jaren is mijn fascinatie voor groepen steeds duidelijker en prominenter geworden. Deze groep Corps jongens waren de eerste groep die ik ook als zodanig fotografeerde.

Veel mensen uit mijn omgeving maakten zich bij aanvang van hun studietijd lid van een, bij voorkeur corporale verenigingen. Hoewel ik me in deze gezelschappen kostelijk vermaakt heb, heb ik nooit de behoefte gevoeld om ook daadwerkelijk deel te worden van een dergelijke groep.

While trying to determine where my fascination for costuming was rooted I found this picture of my granddad and me. I must have been around the age of 8 years old.

My granddad, who had a butchery in his working life, was retired by the time I was born. He took me along while my parents were working. In my youngest years when, not at school I was on his side. He was acquainted to many, so we visited many. Farmers, shop-owners, the fire-brigade name it he spoke with everyone. He was a very social en charismatic man with a great love and passion for the joint force of mankind and in line with this, the technical abilities to unburden man’s task.

Born in 1918 he grew up in economic depression, lived through WW II in adolescence and enjoyed ’’the free world’s marvels’’ thereafter. Although he loved the quality’s of modernity he was very attached to the social connection.

Now recently I watched the documentary The UP Serries.(1) The premise of the film was taken from the Jesuit motto “Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man”, which is based on a quotation by Francis Xavier.

If we forget the Jesuit part and focus upon the theorem. The realization that as we grow up, in many cases the values of our grandparents have serious influence on our lives is immense to me. Especially the fact that, it is this subconscious phase of life in which many additional qualities to social-in(ex)clusion are added I find tremendous. This idea declares a lot to me if I take a closer look at todays social confusion.

Despite the fact that many of us have had these grand-parental relations and strong experiences, people are lost. Several decades of improving education, economic growth, and lots of new sorts of media intruded into our lives.

The question in which variety the consequences of these developments manifest in social-inclusion have my exceptional interest. In present peaking individualism the search for companionship and fraternity is on. What do we do, and where do we find meaning in these days of make-ability? Can we move forward without properly looking back?

This phenomena of meaning, belonging and social-inclusion is key in my current research for the theme Beauty. I look for order as the drill for companionship. Where vainglory represents the sense of pride to the belonging. Besides that I question the rank of concepts as meaning, belonging and Possession.

(1)The Up Series is a series of documentary films produced by Granada Television that have followed the lives of fourteen British children since 1964, when they were seven years old. The documentary has had eight episodes spanning 49 years (one episode every seven years) and the documentary has been broadcast on both ITV and BBC. In a 2005 Channel 4 program, the series topped the list of The 50 Greatest Documentaries.

For this class, during the last block of this semester, we work by methods of a photographer of choice and focus upon a subcultural group.

I Choose to work inspired by Alec Soth, who’s work you can find on my inspiration blog (whatcamecross.tumblr.com). I will focus upon the subcultural group of creators. A group of people that live with a strict passion or fascination for specific things. This can be anything, some of them want to live free to feel alive, others must build that one house they dream of. The thing they have in common is that they all have an thriving urge.

This week we worked by the titel ‘And me’. I found some people that I know of for a couple of years now. They have kitchens on wheels. A scene that is rooted in film catering and developed it self thru traveling art festivals in the Netherlands. This year happened to be a great success for them business wise. A huge crowd came to visit this years festival at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.

Since I worked in catering myself a lot I always envied these people with there extravagant kitchens and bars. For these weeks assignment I imagined myself being one of them.

Deze vraag werd me afgelopen week gesteld toen ik aan het werken was aan een project op de Amsterdams ZuidAs. Dat bracht me op het idee om deze definitie ook hier met jullie te delen.

De organisatie “World Union of Documentary“ gaf in 1948 deze definitie aan documentaire:

“Met documentairefilm wordt bedoeld alle methoden van opname op celluloid (dat is het materiaal waar fotorolletjes van gemaakt worden, tegenwoordig ook digitaal) van enig aspect van de realiteit door ofwel feitelijke filmopname ofwel door een integere en gerechtvaardigde reconstructie, om daarmee een beroep te doen op zowel verstand als gevoel, met als doel het stimuleren van het verlangen naar en het vergroten van menselijke kennis en begrip, en het eerlijk tonen van problemen en oplossingen daarvan op het terrein van economie, cultuur en menselijke relaties.”

Stichting Wakker Dier heeft net een nieuwe campagne gelanceerd om meer bewustzijn te creëren rondom de consumptie van kippenvlees. Ter vergelijking laten ze een ‘normale’ kip en een plofkip zien.

Vorig jaar rond deze tijd maakte ik voor het vak reclamefotografie een campagne ter promotie van biologisch kippenvlees. Ik koos er daar voor om de vergelijking tussen mens en plofkip te laten zien gebaseerd op de feiten rondom plofkippen.

For this class, during the last block of this semester, we work by methods of a photographer of choice and focus upon a subcultural group.

I Choose to work inspired by Gregory Crewdson, who’s work you can find on my inspiration blog (whatcamacross.tumblr.com). An I will focus upon the subcultural group of creators.

This week we worked by the theme ‘Here I am’. I focused on the procrastination phenomenon, a set a rituals that many artists perform as a matter of postponement. With ‘Here I am’ I show my never ending need to wander and be with nature, whenever I am restless or in despair.

And there it is! BERLIN HEUTE! a contemporary photography journal on Berlin.

Early april 2012 forty-two photography students of the KABK The Hague, went on an field trip to document the city of Berlin. They all worked by the theme; Berlin hat viele farben (Berlin has many colors, or The colors of Berlin).

Right here in front of you is the end result of there investigations. All photographers had 2,5 days time to make the series. A true challenge with stunning results.

My feature is to be seen from page 81.

Since I like to hunt for specific things but often don’t know what to do with it, I started to photograph them. And so I do with Airplanes in blue skies. Two weeks ago in Berlin I Shot a quite special one.

… And there it was, the stunning stack of wood, 9174 m3 and 45.98 meters high.

A brave generation made the attempt to challenge there fathers that set a worldrecord 25 years ago. Months went by, rains, blizzards, freezing cold, setbacks, fatigue, and doubts, but the piles of wood kept on growing, and so did the social cohesion. Nearly 6 months of hard labor brought a small community together to celebrate there sheer will and determination.

What started as generational strife, evolved into a metaphor for social cohesion and companionship that would dominate the news for weeks. Non commercial projects like these are becoming scarce and seem to be incomprehensible for the regular consumer that is fed with thoughts of profits and financial gain.

The irritation about this trend set me of to this place to follow the proces of the building. The people of Espelo, didn’t quite understand what I came searching for early january when there was nothing to see at all. Nevertheless they welcomed the funny guy from Amsterdam warmly and gave me shelter when I needed it.

The project is not finished yet. When the corn starts to bloom the spot of the fire should be visible in the hight of the crop.

A small book shall be the end product of this project.

For now I want thank the very hospitable community of Espelo for all there good care.
